Debate Team Impresses at Wayne State

ISU Debate Team Members

The ISU debate team had an impressive showing at the recent Wayne State University Debate Tournament in Detroit. One of the oldest running tournaments in the country, the WSU Tournament is an important test for conference rivals. The ISU debate team had both individual and team success. The highlight of the weekend was freshman Jeremiah Pickert (Walter Payton High School) winning the top speaker award in the varsity division, the first such award in the varsity division for ISU in nearly a decade. Other individual winners were junior Scott Siebert (Sandberg High School), third place junior varsity speaking award and sophomore Ariel Howard (John Hope College Prep), fourth place junior varsity speaking award.

The varsity team lost a close 2-1 decision in quarterfinals to a tough Michigan State team. In the junior varsity division, Howard and Siebert were second seed going into elimination rounds and lost a close 2-1 decision to the University of Northern Iowa. Encouraged by this success, the team is preparing for their next tournament at Wake Forest University, North Carolina. They are well on their way to achieving their goal of qualifying for the National Debate Tournament.
