Senior faculty award winners are Dr. Gary L.Creasy, Department of Psychology; Dr. Shawn Hitchcock, Department of Chemistry; and Dr. K. Aaron Smith, Department of English. Junior faculty award winners are Dr. William Philpott, Department of History; and Dr. Amy E. Three faculty members are winners of the 2008 College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Service Awards for their extraordinary service accomplishments: Dr. Frank Beck, Department of Sociology and Anthropology; Dr. Steve Hunt, School of Communication; and Dr. R.K. Jayaswal, Department of Biological Sciences. Every year a committee selects one winner from each of the College’s three divisions: Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Humanities. Winners are eligible to be nominated in future years for the Outstanding University Service Award. “All of this year’s winners have devoted much time and energy in service to the College and to ISU,” said Associate Dean Sally Parry. “We are very proud of and grateful to each of them.”

Carl Wenning

Dr. Carl J. Wenning, education specialist and retired member of ISU’s Physics Teacher Education Program, has been elected to the three-year presidential sequence of the Illinois Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers. This is the second time Wenning has been elected to this post, and he is the only person to have been appointed this position twice in ISAAPT’s 67-year history. He was elected during the joint ISAAPT/IACT meeting in early October, which was hosted at ISU with Wenning as the meeting’s organizer. Wenning will serve for three years as president elect, president, and then past president for the organization, as he did previously from 1998-2000.

Stephen Hunt
|
Stephen Hunt, associate professor in the School of Communication, has been named the first recipient of the “Educating Illinois in Action” honor. The honor, presented by the Educating Illinois Coordinating Team, recognizes individuals, offices or programs that exemplify the goals and strategies of the Educating Illinois 2008-2014 strategic plan. Hunt has been honored for his commitment to student-centered teaching and for his service to both the University and the local community. As a faculty member in the School of Communication, Hunt has been the co-director of the basic communication course (COM 110) since 1998. In that position he is responsible for training graduate assistants who teach many of the COM 110 sections in the University’s general education program. His style of giving personal attention and actively involving students in the learning process has earned him a number of teaching awards including the Outstanding University Teacher Award (2007), Stan and Sandy Rives Excellence in Undergraduate Education Award (2007), Dean’s Award for Outstanding Teaching (2006) and the University Teaching Initiative Award (2002).

ISU Physics Club and Reggie's Chuckin Wagon

For the second consecutive year, the ISU Physics Club won first place in the Morton Pumpkin Chuckin contest on October 17-18. The team defended their first place title with a win in the Open Class Trebuchet Division. Their trebuchet is called Reggie’s Chuckin Wagon, and they took first prize with a chuck of 952 feet. The trebuchet began as a student design project for Professor George Rutherford's Experimental Physics class in spring 2001. Students used three concrete-filled tires as counterweight and won third place in the Morton Pumpkin Chuckin that fall with a toss of 613 feet. The machine is now in its third generation, has been mounted on a trailer, and has picked up several sponsors (Dennison Auto Center, Morris Tick Co., Inc., and Tremont Lumber Company). Krishna K. Manavalli
|
Krishna Manavalli joins the ISU faculty as an assistant professor of English. She received her PhD from Michigan State University, where she focused on postcolonial and global literary studies. She holds a master's degree in English from Old Dominion University. Her research engages postcolonial literature and theory, Indo-Anglian literature, and feminist cultural studies. She has taught courses ranging from women's writing in America to Middle Eastern studies. Apart from English, she is also fluent in Sanskrit, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, and Tamil.
