Dean Gary A. Olson

Dean Olson announced today, January 13, that he has accepted a position as Vice President and Provost at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. A comprehensive, multi-campus doctoral university, Idaho State serves as the state’s principal university promoting education in the health care professions and related sciences. Olson will oversee seven colleges, ISU’s libraries, and the Idaho Museum of Natural History. He will be charged with helping to develop its branch campuses, promote its world-class nuclear engineering program, and usher in a new school of medicine. “Illinois State has been a wonderful home for the last five years,” said Dean Olson. “I will especially miss our first-rate faculty and staff and the many close friends I have made in the community.”

Susan Sprecher

Illinois State University President Al Bowman has appointed Susan Sprecher, Professor of Sociology with a joint appointment in Psychology, as Distinguished Professor at Illinois State effective Aug. 16, 2009. Sprecher has been on the Illinois State faculty since 1985 and received her bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a highly respected, nationally and internationally known expert in the interdisciplinary field of personal relationships. Professor John Harvey of the University of Iowa states that “without question, Professor Sprecher is one of the foremost experts on personal relationship topics in the world.” Professor F. Scott Christopher of Arizona State University writes that “her research program is impressive in its depth and breadth.”

Three faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences announced their retirements at the conclusion of the fall semester: Dr. Jeanne Howard, Professor of Social Work; Dr. Richard Payne, Distinguished Professor of Politics and Government; and Dr. Walt Smoski, Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. Dr. Howard will continue her work as Director of the Center for Adoption Studies. “Although we will miss having Dr. Howard as a member of our faculty, we are fortunate that she will be continuing her important work as Director of the Center for Adoption Studies,” said Dr. Wanda Bracy,

On December 17 Illinois State University dedicated its Center for Renewable Energy, which will assist ISU in addressing the education and research needs of the nation’s rapidly expanding renewable energy industry. The Center coordinates education, outreach and research efforts on wind, solar, biofuel and other alternative energy sources. It brings together faculty from several academic disciplines and colleges at Illinois State to support the University’s renewable energy major, provide the public with objective research-based information on renewable energy and facilitate applied research through collaborations with other universities. Dave Loomis, an associate professor of economics serves as the Center’s director. Dave Kennell, an instructional assistant professor of technology, and Randy Winter, a professor of agricultural economics, are the Center’s associate directors.

Donna Eisenstadt

Donna Eisenstadt is a new Associate Professor in the Psychology Department. She earned her PhD in Psychology from the CUNY Graduate Center. Before coming to ISU, she taught at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Adelphi University, and Saint Louis University. Eisenstadt is a social psychologist with research foci in the areas of self and social identity, prejudice and prejudice reduction, and psychology and law. She holds memberships in various professional organizations, including the Association for Psychological Science, the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. In her free time, she enjoys reading novels, playing chess, traveling, and spending time with her friends, family, and three dogs, cat, and guinea pig.
