The Office of the Provost has announced the winners of the 2009 University Research Awards. Three College of Arts and Sciences faculty were honored. Dr. Michael Stevens, Professor of Psychology, was chosen to receive the Outstanding University Researcher Award for 2009. This award recognizes faculty members who have established national and/or international reputations in their fields. Dr. Nobuko Adachi, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, and Dr. Amy Robillard, Assistant Professor of English, were chosen as recipients of the Research Initiative Award for 2009. This award recognizes faculty members who have initiated a promising research agenda. “The College of Arts and Sciences is fortunate to include such exceptional and talented scholars on its faculty,” said Dean Olson. “Their work is furthering the College’s legacy of scholarship and excellence.” Click Read More for more photos.

Cheri Simonds, John Hooker, and Stephen Hunt

This fall the National Communication Association (NCA) presented its inaugural Program of Excellence award to Illinois State University for its Communication as Critical Inquiry (COM 110) course, an integral course in the general education program at ISU, co-chaired by Dr. Cheri Simonds, Dr. Stephen Hunt, and John Hooker. Dr. Scott Titsworth, who serves as division chair of The Basic Course Division of the NCA, stated, “Illinois State University stands out as being uniquely deserving of the Program of Excellence Award for three reasons. First, the ISU program is an unparalleled leader in research exploring communication pedagogy. Second, ISU has created a track record of training graduate students to become leaders in basic course pedagogy…ISU faculty and students are now starting to influence basic course education throughout the country. Finally, the ISU program models how the basic communication course can serve as a cornerstone of a contemporary and meaningful general education experience for undergraduates.”

Pavao Rudan, Ivor Janković, Fred Smith, and Ivor Karavanić
|
Fred Smith, Professor of Anthropology and Chair of the ISU Department of Sociology and Anthropology, was presented the Dragutin Gorjanović-Kramberger Medal in recognition of his contributions to anthropology and scientific research in Croatia at a ceremony preceding the opening of the School of Biological Anthropology in Croatia earlier this month. In addition, his doctoral student at the University of Zagreb, Ivor Janković, successfully defended his doctoral dissertation during the visit. Dr. Pavao Rudan, Director of Zagreb’s Anthropological Institute and member of the Croatian Academy, made the presentation. “Fred Smith has not only made major contributions to science through his work on the Croatian Neandertal remains from Krapina, Vindija, and Mujina Pećina but also has played a major role in the development of anthropology in Croatia. He has spent a lot of time with our students and helped them in many ways. Our new Dr. Janković’s success in paleoanthropology is evidence of Fred’s interest and involvement. And besides, how many Americans understand Croatian?”

Ron Gifford
|
Dr. Ron Gifford, Advisor and Assistant Professor of History and History and Social Sciences Education, is the recipient of the 2009 Stan and Sandy Rives Excellence in Undergraduate Education Award. Gifford is being honored with this award for his commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, particularly during students’ first-year experience. His focus on each student as an individual, with unique educational needs and potential, was a major factor in his selection. Dr. Diane Zosky, Interim Chair for the Department of History and Associate Professor in the School of Social Work, observed, “Few faculty or staff on this campus have done as much to further the excellence of undergraduate education as Dr. Gifford. He is conscientious and meticulous about advisement of students and ensures that they use their time here in the most beneficial way to achieve their educational goals. Most importantly, he does this with a great deal of care and attention to each student as an individual. He is the ‘heart and soul’ of this department and we are quite fortunate to have him as our team player.”

Mark Vegter
|
Mark Vegter, Department of English, is this year’s recipient of the Herb Sanders Award for Outstanding Academic Advisement. The award recognizes advisors who display a compassion for students, who are assistive in their contacts with students, and who support campus-wide academic advisement. “I'm delighted that Mark Vegter won the Herb Sanders Award. I have known him as an advisee, an advisor in University College, and now as an advisor in the English Department.” said Associate Dean Sally Parry.
