James Payne

Department of Economics Chair James Payne will assume the position of interim dean of Illinois State University’s College of Arts and Sciences for two years, effective July 1. A nationwide search will be conducted to find a permanent replacement for current Dean Gary Olson, who is leaving Illinois State for the provost position at Idaho State University. Payne, who has served as Department of Economics chair since 2003, earned his PhD in economics from Florida State University. Prior to his appointment at Illinois State, Payne held tenure track appointments at Oakland University and Eastern Kentucky University as well as visiting appointments at the University of Southern Mississippi Economics Institute and the University of Kentucky.

William Anderson

Professor William Anderson, Appalachian State University, will deliver ISU's 2009 John W. Foster Lecture on Friday, February 6 at 3 p.m. in 209 Felmley Hall. His lecture, entitled "The Role of Random Processes and Interannual Climate Oscillations on Groundwater,” is free and open to the public. Dr. Anderson’s research concentrates on several aspects of hydrogeology: groundwater-surface water interactions, groundwater-climate interactions,  coastal  hydrogeology,  fractured bedrock hydrogeology, and recharge quantification. He teaches Introduction to Physical Geology and Advanced Environmental and Engineering Geology courses in addition to mentoring undergraduate research.

Sara Gazarek
Singer/songwriter Sara Gazarek will lead a free afternoon Masterclass in conjunction with her performance at the 2009 GLT Jazz Masters Concert. The class is open to all ages and will take place in the ISU Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall at 1:30 pm on Saturday, February 7. An experienced educator, Sara will focus on the voice and would love to have lots of participation. Vocalists are encouraged to bring sheet music of a song in their own range, and other musicians are encouraged to attend with their instruments. Gazarek will cover working with a band and instrumentalists, creating your own sound, and approaching a song.

Professor of History Lee Beier has co-edited Cast Out: Vagrancy and Homelessness in Global and Historical Perspective (Ohio University Press). According to the press, it is the first book to consider the shared global heritage of vagrancy laws, homelessness, and the historical processes they accompanied. “This impressive collection of essays on vagrancy, homelessness, and poverty has truly global historical dimensions,” notes historian Robert Tignor. “It covers seven centuries and five continents, has a superb introductory overview, and is comparative social history at its best. It deserves to have a wide readership.”

The “Gala Benefit: An Awareness Evening about Street Children and Orphans” will be held in the Circus Room of Bone Student center from 4 to 6 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 8. It is an event intended to raise awareness about street children and orphans worldwide and give a coalition of professors, students and staff from Illinois State an opportunity to share the knowledge they have gained by working with, studying or adopting street children or orphans.Guests will be able to circulate around the room and take part in question-answer stations, view clips from documentaries, see visual displays and purchase Global Children Outreach t-shirts and Crossroads Global Handcrafts products.

Ali Riaz

As a result of his testimony at a hearing held on December 4 in Washington, DC by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom Dr. Ali Riaz, Chair of the Department of Politics and Government, was subsequently quoted in Time magazine. Erin McCormick and Jacob Long

On Monday, February 2, TV-10, ISU’s student-run television station, will begin airing a five-part series focusing on President Barack Obama’s inauguration and compiled by two ISU students. Working for TV-10, reporter Jacob Long and photographer Erin McCormick traveled to Washington, DC in January and met with many of the nation’s leaders, including Senator Roland Burris and Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson. Long and McCormick also spoke with Normal Mayor Chris Koos, as well as a number of ISU alumni who were in Washington for the inauguration. The duo worked on several stories while in Washington. Some of the material gathered from their visit was sent to Peoria to air on Monday, January 19 on Peoria’s news station WMBD. Other material has been compiled into reports exclusively for TV-10. TV-10 News is seen every weekday at noon on Comcast Cable Channel 20 and campus cable channel 5. Newscasts are rebroadcast at 5 p.m. daily.

2009 Mock Trial Team

Last month the ISU mock trial team competed in tournaments held at Ohio Northern University (ONU) and the University of Illinois. ISU fields two mock trial squads, 980 and 981. At ONU, Squad 981 placed fourth out of 48 teams, and team members Mike Lill, Brandon Robertson, Alex Turner, and Jennifer Zang were named Outstanding Witnesses. At the UI tournament, Mike Ditore was named an Oustanding Attorney, and Mike Lill was recognized as an Outstanding Witness. “The Mock Trial team has had its best start in the history of the program,” said Thomas McClure, Director of Legal Studies at Illinois State University. “Mock Trial Coach Scott Kording, Assistant Coach Mick Hall, and the student competitors are to be commended for their continued success this season.” Squad 981 has placed among the top five teams in each of their first five tournaments. In addition, individual students have been award winners at every competition in both outstanding witness and outstanding attorney categories.
