Vernon C. Pohlmann
|
Vernon C. Pohlmann, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, and the late Elsie D. Pohlmann have endowed the Pohlmann Family Development Grants and the Pohlmann Resource and Conference Room in the Stevenson Center. Their donation furthers the Center’s commitment to involving students and faculty in and out of the classroom in a blend of academic scholarship, community volunteerism, research, and development. Funds from one endowment will be used to name, furnish, and maintain the Pohlmann Resource and Conference Room in the Stevenson Center. The space will be used for meetings of the Board, staff, and the Applied Community and Economic Development Student Association. Stevenson Center students can also use the space for their own work as funds provide for work stations, books, and journal subscriptions.

Joan Mullin, Chair of the Department of English, has co-edited Who Owns This Text?: Plagiarism, Authorship, and Disciplinary Cultures (Utah State University Press, 2009). The book is a collaborative work that focuses on the subjects of plagiarism, authorship, and intellectual property, and how these are conceived across different fields. “The editors make an especially strong argument that scholars need not only to speak across disciplines, but also to be clear themselves on conventions within their own fields—and to clearly introduce their students to those conventions,” said Michael Spooner, director of the Utah State University Press. The study investigated several different academic fields to find out what types of scholarly production academics thought they owned, what they, rather than the courts, considered their intellectual property. The book reads much like a conversation and presents a wide range of ideas that will generate discussion on the practice of intellectual property, plagiarism, and authorship.

The College has just hired Jason McCrone, who joined the CAS-IT staff on February 2. McCrone will support the technology-related needs of six departments and two programs housed in DeGarmo, Fairchild, Rachel Cooper, and Schroeder Halls. McCrone earned his BS from ISU and previously provided instructional technology support for the registrar's office. “Jason brings with him nine years of IT experience here at ISU, and I know he will provide excellent service to the College of Arts and Sciences,” said Ann Beck, Associate Dean for Research, Technology, and Facilities. “As a faculty member, I am excited about Jason McCrone joining CAS-IT,” added Dr. James Kalmbach, Associate Chair of the Department of English, who served on the search committee. “His years of experience working in tech support at ISU, his experience with enterprise-level deployment, and his strong customer service skills will be a real asset. We are blessed in the College of Arts and Sciences to have a strong tech support unit, and the addition of Jason McCrone will make the unit even stronger.”
