Professor James J. Pancrazio, Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, recently published Enriqueta Faber: travestismo, documentos e historia (Editorial Verbum, 2009). The book is a critical anthology of texts written about a famous episode in 19th century Cuban history: a she-to-he transvestite’s marriage to another woman. Although the case is virtually unknown outside the island, the events of the first half of the 19th century are legendary in Cuban literary and cultural history. The case has so fascinated Cuban writers that they have written three novels, countless articles, encyclopedia entries, chronicles, and even a play and short length film. Each generation of Cuban writers rewrites the events that unfolded in 1823, infusing them with new meanings. Although each text approaches the theme differently, this is not to say that there is a general consensus regarding the need to explain Faber’s transvestism. Each text constitutes a rejoinder to the polemic about why a woman would disguise herself as a man, obtain a degree in surgery, and marry another woman. All of these texts provide new insights into the reasons behind Faber’s actions.
