All faculty, emeritus faculty, staff, students, administrators, and friends in the community are cordially invited to a welcoming reception for the College of Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame, Class of 2009. This year's class is comprised of four alumni and four emeritus professors who are also exceptional leaders in their fields. “Prairie and Savanna Restoration: The State of the Art and Science,” a symposium honoring Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Ecology Roger C. Anderson, will be held on Friday, March 27 at ISU’s Alumni Center. Dr. Reed Noss, noted conservation biologist at the University of Central Florida, will deliver the keynote address at 4 p.m. His talk, "Fire, Big Animals, and Bad Weather: Origins & Maintenance of Southern Grasslands," is free and open to the public. “Dr. Anderson has established a national reputation as a scientist and teacher,” said Tak Cheung. “We are delighted to have this opportunity to celebrate his many accomplishments.”

The Illinois Associated Press has once again honored the WGLT News Department for Journalistic Excellence with a station record nine first and second place awards. As part of the Downstate Radio category, GLT won more awards this year than any Illinois radio station outside of Chicago. The awards also expanded the number of individual GLT staff honored, with every newsroom staffer winning at least one award. WGLT won five first place awards: Best Reporter – Willis Kern; Best Investigative Series – Charlie Schlenker; Best Spot News –Schlenker; Best Sports – Schlenker; and Best Use of Sound –Schlenker. Second place awards went to Kern in the Best Newswriter category, Laura Kennedy for Best Light Feature, Schlenker for Best Hard News Feature, and to the GLT News team of Kern, Schlenker, Kennedy, Jim Browne, and Mike McCurdy for Outstanding News Operation.

Dr. Paula Ressler, Associate Professor of English, and Dr. Becca Chase, Assistant Cirector of Women’s and Gender Studies, co-guest-edited the March 2009 issue of English Journal. With a circulation of 25,000, EJ is the premier secondary English journal. This special issue on “Sexual Identity and Gender Variance” was conceptualized to respond to the National Council of Teachers of English 2007 “Resolution on Strengthening Teacher Knowledge of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Issues.”

Marina Balina of Illinois Wesleyan University will present the annual Lois Lenski Children's Literature Lecture at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 23, in 130 Schroeder Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public. Balina, the Isaac Funk Professor of Russian Studies at IWU who recently co-edited Russian Children's Literature and Culture, will speak on "Pinocchio's Adventures in the Soviet Wonderland: Contexts and Challenges of Soviet Children's Literature." The Lois Lenski Children’s Literature Lecture is cosponsored by the Department of English and Milner Library.

The Candidate Forum is sponsored by the League of Women Voters, the ISU Senior Professionals, and the ISU Student Government Association. The Illinois State Historical Society’s directors, editorial advisors, and members selected John Freed's article, “The Founding of Illinois State University: Normal School of State University,” as the winner of the Society’s 2009 Harry E. Pratt Award. The Pratt Award, named for an outstanding former Illinois State Historical Library scholar and researcher, is presented annually by the Society to the author of the best article published the previous year in the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society, as judged by the Journal’s advisory committee. Freed is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at Illinois State University.

Two Illinois State University debaters took top honors at the 2009 Bioethics Debate Tournament held at Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan, March 13-14. This is the first time Illinois State debaters have traveled abroad for debate-related activities. The topic for the debates was “Resolved: That Euthanasia Should Be Legalized.” Alex Berger (senior, History/Philosophy major) was teamed with Wang Jing Yi from China. The two debaters won the overall tournament, defeating Cynthia Luo and Aishwarya Nair from Assumption University in Bangkok, Thailand. Alex also received the third place overall speaker award.
