Professor Hilary Justice, Department of English, was the featured speaker prior to a reception on June 18 celebrating Milner Library’s new exhibit, “Picturing Hemingway: A Writer in His Time.” “Illinois State University is very fortunate to have someone of Dr. Justice's caliber serving on its faculty,” said Jean MacDonald, Literature and Languages Librarian at Milner Libary. “She is a well-respected Hemingway scholar and one who manages to make Ernest Hemingway's life and artistry accessible to the average individual as well as the student of American literature.” The exhibit was created for Hemingway’s centennial birthday in 1999 by the National Portrait Gallery’s Chief Historian, Frederick C. Voss. Photographs were chosen by Mr. Voss for the exhibit to narrate a timeline of Hemingway’s life. The exhibit will run from June 8 to September 30 and is currently located on the second floor of Milner Library.

Digital Defoe, an online, peer-reviewed journal, premiered on June 1 with an array of scholarly and pedagogical texts on eighteenth-century culture, including an essay by Illinois State PhD candidate Beyazit Akman. Katherine Ellison, assistant professor of English, is co-editor and designer of the first issue. The journal is part of the open access movement and focuses on Daniel Defoe, perhaps most well known as the author of Robinson Crusoe but also an innovator of the novel, prolific poet, political pamphleteer, and even secret agent, and other authors and topics of the early eighteenth century. Ellison’s project is the first peer-reviewed web forum for scholars and educators of eighteenth-century culture to share their work in multimedia as well as showcase new teaching methods, works in progress, and student voices.

Krzysztof Ostaszewski
Dr. Krzysztof M. Ostaszewski, Professor of Mathematics and Director of the Actuarial Program, recently attained the Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst (CERA) designation from the Society of Actuaries (SOA). The Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst is a new international credential encompassing the most comprehensive and rigorous demonstration of enterprise risk management (ERM) available and stems from the same process through which actuaries earn other credentials, such as the Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and the Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA). The CERA marks the first new credential since the SOA's founding in 1949. “This new designation is one that attests to the high profile of Dr. Ostaszewski in the actuarial profession,” said Dr. George Seelinger, Chair of the Mathematics Department.
